Water
The purpose of this program is to prevent water-borne illnesses in drinking water from private wells that serve individuals and wells providing water to food, childcare, and lodging establishments. Technical assistance is provided to the public in the collection of water samples, water treatment systems, disinfection of water supplies, and well installation.
Private well water sample kits for bacteriological testing may be picked up at the St. Francois County Health Center. All instructions are included in the kit. Water samples should be collected and returned to the health center by 10:00 am Monday through Thursday. There is a $10.00 fee for this service.
Water from wells that provide unsafe drinking water should be boiled at least two minutes before use. The well may need to be “shocked” and retested to ensure the water is safe. Follow these guidelines to shock your well.
