Inspections

Retail Food Establishments

The St. Francois County Health Center (SFCHC) provides pre-opening, routine and follow-up inspections to a growing inventory of more than 300 retail food establishments.  These inspections are conducted assure these facilities are preparing, handling, serving, and/or storing food that is safe for human consumption.

The SFHC provides information to consumers and food industry personnel on safe food handling practices, including personal hygiene, food preparation and food storage.  It is through education and the use of the Missouri Food Code that efforts are made to decrease the incidence of foodborne illness.

The SFCHC works with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MoDHSS) in assuring retail food establishments are compliant with the Missouri Food Code.  Retail food establishments are routinely inspected under the Missouri Food Code adopted by the MoDHSS in 2013.  This code is derived from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2009 Model Food Code.

Facilities inspected as food establishments include, but are not limited to, restaurants, school cafeterias, retail grocery, meat markets, convenience stores, senior citizen centers, mobile food and temporary food establishments, taverns, bakeries, delicatessens, food pantries and USDA summer food program sites.

Child Care Facilities

Environmental health representatives at the St. Francois County Health Center conduct sanitation inspections of licensed child care family homes, licensed group homes and licensed childcare centers within the county.  Annual inspections of these facilities are conducted on behalf of the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Bureau of Childcare Licensure and Regulation (MoDHSS BCCLR).  Inspections are conducted to verify compliance with the sanitation inspection guidelines established by the MoDHSS.

Commercial Lodging

Lodging establishments are inspected annually by the St. Francois County Health Center on behalf o the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MoDHSS).  Each lodging establishment is inspected with a focus on public health, sanitation, and for conditions that may endanger life safety.  These areas of inspection are regulated through a state rule that addresses drinking water supplies, sewage/wastewater treatment, life safety, fire safety, electrical wiring, fuel-burning appliances, plumbing, food safety and swimming pools and spas.

Each lodging establishment is required to obtain a MoDHSS-issued lodging license on an annual basis.  Enforcement authority for lodging establishments rests with the MoDHSS.
